Charis — Greek for grace
Lost the remote, or just tired of AAA batteries? CharisRemote pairs directly with your smart TV over your own Wi-Fi — no cloud relay, no account, no ads. Free core remote forever; $9.99 once unlocks touchpad and shortcuts.
Works with TVs that show a pairing code on screen when a phone on the same Wi-Fi connects. It does not pair Bluetooth remotes.
The idea
CharisRemote doesn't. It speaks your TV's own remote-control protocol directly, over the Wi-Fi network you're already on — no middleman, no account.
There's no server this app talks to for pairing or control. Key presses, volume, and typing travel straight from your phone to your TV over an encrypted local connection. The one exception: the optional Pro purchase, which Apple's own StoreKit handles directly.
Your device's pairing identity lives in the iPhone's Keychain. Come back tomorrow, or after a phone restart, and CharisRemote just reconnects — no PIN, no re-pairing.
CharisRemote refuses to connect over cellular data, and refuses any address that isn't on your local network — even if you type one in by hand.
What's in it
Why not just use another TV remote app?
| Area | Other TV remote apps | CharisRemote |
|---|---|---|
| Where commands travel | Often relayed through a cloud service | Direct, encrypted, straight to your TV over Wi-Fi |
| Account | Usually required | None, ever |
| Network | May work over cellular or a remote relay | Wi-Fi only — refuses cellular and non-local addresses outright |
| Cost | Subscription or ad-supported | Free core forever; $9.99 once for the extras |
| Ads | Common on the free tier | None, ever, on any tier |
The name
The product promise follows from the name: control the TV you already have, without asking for anything beyond that — no account, no cloud detour, no ads funding the free tier.
